New Research Shows Engineering Firms' Impact on Economy, Continued Optimism on Business Climate

WASHINGTON – The ACEC Research Institute – the leading source of original research for the business of engineering – released the results of two important studies on the current and future state of the engineering industry, and its role in the overall U.S. economy. The reports, the 2024 Economic Assessment of the Engineering & Design Services Industry and the Engineering Business Sentiment Report for 2024 Q4, both point to continued optimism for the industry and its firms, though somewhat softened compared to previous quarters. "This research shows the outsized impact the engineering industry has on the American economy," said ACEC Research Institute Chair Mike Carragher. "As the engineering industry's contributions grow year over year, the Institute's research helps firm executives position their businesses for a successful future." All told, the industry added $656 billion to the U.S. GDP in 2023, supported well over five million jobs directly or indirectly, and contributed $92 billion to federal tax coffers, with an additional $44 billion in state and local taxes. Overall, the report found that the engineering and design services industry has continued to build on its year-over-year post-COVID gains, growing 5.5% in 2023 to $436 billion, with much of that growth driven by infrastructure projects. Non-residential and non-building construction, flush with government funding through the IIJA and Inflation Reduction Act, remained on an upward trajectory.

ASCE Statement on Congress Passage of WRDA 2024

WASHINGTON, DC. – ASCE applauds Congress for passing the bipartisan Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) for 2024, Congress's biennial authorization for new U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) projects. WRDA 2024 authorizes 21 USACE water resources projects across 15 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, with a focus on waterway navigation, hurricane and storm damage risk reduction, flood risk management, and ecosystem restoration. This legislation will support vital port and inland waterways projects through provisions such as an adjustment of the cost share formula for the Inland Waterways Trust Fund (IWTF), which helps pay for major rehabilitation and construction efforts along navigation channels, and an increase in the depth at which federal port and harbor projects can receive federal assistance for construction and maintenance. These provisions can help raise the ports (B-) and inland waterways (D+) grades reflected in ASCE's 2021 Report Card for America's Infrastructure, and we are thrilled to see WRDA 2024 prioritizing policies that will improve the nation's infrastructure systems. The latest agreement includes the reauthorization of the National Dam Safety Program (NDSP) through 2028, a top legislative priority for ASCE and a critical program needed to improve the "D" grade that dams received in the 2021 Report Card for America's Infrastructure. The NDSP is the primary source of federal funding supporting state dam safety programs with inspection and monitoring activities, emergency preparedness, and staffing needs. The agreement also incorporates low-head dams into the National Inventory of Dams. These small structures can have deadly consequences when unaccounted for because they produce dangerous, undetectable currents. Incorporating them into the National Inventory of Dams will increase awareness and lead to more safety precautions that could save lives. On the cusp of the 70th anniversary of the originally named New York Airport’s opening in Queens, N.Y., a blue-ribbon panel in 2017 released a report to the governor of New York: The facility, once popularly known as Idlewild Airport, needed a comprehensive master plan and a total transformation. In the seven years since, builders at John F. Kennedy International Airport have been anything but idle, and the speed at which that $19-billion transformation of the roads and terminals is occurring could be called wild. Traub Lieberman Partners Lisa Rolle, Erin O’Dea, and Nicole Verzillo won motion for summary judgment in a premises liability matter brought before the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Westchester County. The Plaintiff allegedly tripped and fell in a pothole on the common driveway of five abutting properties and sustained an injury. The firm represented one of the multiple property owners. Traub Lieberman moved for summary judgment, asserting that the claims against the firm’s client should be dismissed as they did not own, operate, control or make special use of the driveway where the incident occurred. The firm also asserted that the alleged condition of the driveway that allegedly caused Plaintiff’s accident was a non-actionable, trivial defect. The firm also moved to dismiss the cross-claims asserted against them, contending that there was no evidence of negligence on behalf of the firm’s client. As such, the court found that the defect was a non-actionable, trivial defect. Wildfire Risk Harms California Home Values, San Francisco Fed Study Finds

California’s wildfires are weighing on home prices more than in the past, and insurance availability does little to help in areas considered to be at higher risk, according to a Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco study. “Our results suggest that property values have been more adversely impacted in recent years by being close to past wildfires than was the case previously,” economists Leila Bengali, Fernanda Nechio and Stephanie Stewart wrote in a paper published Monday on the Fed bank’s website. While the effect of the proximity may be relatively small now, the economists warned “this pattern may become stronger in years to come if residential construction continues to expand into areas with higher fire risk and if trends in wildfire severity continue,” the study cautioned.
